We know that so many numbers can be overwhelming and confusing. As you're reading through the PDF, if you find yourself confused or wondering "What is this research even saying?!" check out our First Look Workshop. Tanya will explain why these statistics matter, and also be able to answer any questions you have at the live Q&A!
Read our First Look to learn things like
- What do TCKs see as their greatest strengths?
- How common is it for TCKs to struggle as adults?
- Are men and women having similar or different TCK experiences?
- Are younger TCKs more or less likely to see their childhood in a positive light?
- Do Asian TCKs experience different pressures to European TCKs?
- Are Corporate TCKs, Military TCKs, or Missionary TCKs most likely to want to follow in their parents' footsteps?
- Do homeschooled TCKs experience anxiety and depression at similar levels to TCKs attending international schools?
In our Unstacking Sessions and ATCK Processing Retreats, as well as other conversations over time, we have heard many Adult TCKs share specific struggles. We wanted to know if these were widespread throughout the TCK community, or isolated to a smaller subsection of ATCKs who were reaching out for help... We also included strengths commonly referred to when describing the benefits of the TCK life. We wanted to know if these strengths were indeed common across the ATCK community.
FIRST LOOK: DATA FROM THE 2024 SURVEY
In this First Look at data from our 2024 survey, we get to hear from 1,643 Adult TCKs who come from a range of backgrounds. Their responses to questions about their strengths, struggles, and opinions on what it was like to grow up as a TCK and how they see their childhood looking back is enlightening! A variety of information of TCKs' mental health, as children and adults, is also included. There is data both on symptoms TCKs are experiencing, and diagnoses they are receiving from mental health professionals.
A wealth of information is available here for parents and caregivers who want to better understand the TCKs they love and support. Adult TCKs will also learn a lot about trends throughout the TCK community, with responses filtered by a number of demographics.

We asked ATCKs about mental health in several ways. This included screening questions (devised in consultation with mental health professionals) to gauge respondents’ experiences of mental health without naming the specific concerns, as well as asking about formal diagnosis, experiences with mental healthcare, and mental health crises experienced by members of their household during childhood.
